Importance of Personal Development: Building Habits
One of the core values at Mark Spain Real Estate is to constantly grow and improve. We are relentless in the pursuit of self-improvement because our team strives to perform at the highest level possible.
One key factor involved in personal development is building habits. If you are wanting to stride confidently down the path of self-improvement, check out these tips on cultivating excellent habits!
Why Good Habits?
Habits define who we are at our core. As Aristotle has said, “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence then, is not an act, but a habit.” We do not achieve our goals without consistency and a strong foundation. Consistency forms the habit which then forms the foundation.
Many people will operate under the misconception, “that person is simply more disciplined than I am”. In reality, those disciplined people really just have the best habits. They’ve conditioned themselves into achieving excellence.
It’s why we encourage our team to practice the Compound Effect. In order for them to serve their clients at the highest level, they need to be building habits that will allow them to do so.
Building Habits such as waking up early to prepare for the day or setting time aside to make calls. Choices that would seem small make a radical difference when paired with consistency and time. Darren Hardy states, “A daily routine built on good habits and discipline separates the most successful among us from everyone else. A routine is exceptionally powerful.”
Where to Start
By building habits that are good, you are able to achieve that ‘point B’ that you find yourself striving for. It is a common myth that it takes only 21 days to build habits. It all depends on the individual, mindset, environment and the habit itself. With that being said, we have several tips we encourage our team to keep in mind that building habits will lead to more rewarding day to day lives.
Key Ways to Building Habits-
Set a goal: Identify your big picture, your “point B” that you are hoping to achieve.
Small, smart choices: If your goal is reading two books a month, start small. Read 10 pages in one sitting instead of trying to finish a whole book at once.
Consistency: Make the decision and the effort to read those 10 pages every night or every morning.
Time: Be patient and understand that habits won’t crop up in the blink of an eye. With consistency, those 10 pages will become easy and turn into 15 pages or even 30 pages a night.
Rethink “I Have To”: When you reframe your thinking into “I Get To” you are reinforcing what you are striving for. Building the habit is no longer a drawback and is instead a belief.
Use a Habit Tracker: A visual representation of your progress can be satisfying and encourages you to continue your habit.
Practicing these steps allow great habits to form and lead to enriched lives! Personal development starts with just the simple action of ‘doing’. Set your goal and watch a radical difference be made!
