Moving During Quarantine Tips
Minimize Contact and Wear Protective Gear
It is imperative to follow social distancing rules while moving. Tackle the move out process with as little people as possible. Stay 6 feet apart from others and be sure to wear a mask and gloves at all times. If you are using a move-out service, check with them to make sure they are taking necessary precautions such as sanitizing their trucks and wearing protective equipment. Be sure to pack up as much as you can on your home, while only leaving the heavy and largest boxes or items to the movers to limit contact on other boxes as well.
Sanitize and Deep Clean
Another tip is to sanitize everything. It is important to have enough soap, hand sanitizer, or disinfecting sprays on your move out day. Disinfectant spray can be used to coat moving boxes before they are transported. Make sure to wipe down door knobs, handles, or any high contact surfaces in the home when moving. After everything has been moved out of the home, deep clean and sanitize all surfaces to leave the home spotless and clean for new homeowners.
Sort or Donate Items
With more time spent at home, take this time to sort through all your belongings and items. Separate these items into three separate piles – trash, donate, or keep. Donating items is a great way for other people to get use out of an item you don’t use any more. Be sure to sanitize any items you donate. By sorting through your belongings, you are minimizing the amount you will have to pack to allow yourself a quicker move during quarantine.
Packing and Unpacking
When packing up your home, make sure to tackle any unessential items first. Unessential items can include holiday decor, clothes not in season, and wall hangings. It is important to pack a separate overnight bag with all of your essentials. This way, you know where your essential items are at all times and they are easily accessible. Once everything is moved into your new home, leave all the boxes in one place of the home. Be sure to sanitize all boxes and items again, and it is advised to wait 24 hours before opening any boxes to unpack!
